- People with LD and/or Autistic people can no longer be detained for treatment under Section 3 unless they also have a mental illness meeting stricter criteria

- Shorter detention periods
- More frequent tribunal access
- New “nominated person” (chosen representative, not default nearest relative)
- Advance Choice Documents (people can set out treatment preferences in advance going forward)

- Greater protection against inappropriate hospitalisation (a long-standing issue)

- Increased expectation of community-based support instead of inpatient care.
