School and Wellbeing Support

Balancing Caring and Education

Caring responsibilities can sometimes affect attendance, homework, concentration, friendships, or emotional wellbeing. Schools and colleges have a responsibility to support young carers and help them succeed.

Support Available in Education Settings

Schools and colleges may be able to:

  • Offer flexibility around deadlines
  • Provide additional pastoral support
  • Make staff aware of your caring role
  • Support attendance where caring responsibilities are affecting school life
  • Signpost to specialist services
  • Help during transitions between education stages

Looking After Your Wellbeing

Your wellbeing matters just as much as the person you care for.

Ways to support your wellbeing include:

  • Taking regular breaks
  • Staying connected with friends
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Participating in hobbies and activities you enjoy
  • Speaking to someone when things feel difficult
  • Accessing counselling or emotional wellbeing services if needed

Remember

Being a carer is only one part of who you are. You also deserve opportunities to learn, develop, have fun, and achieve your goals.
